Especially during the colder months, it is worthwhile to support the immune system naturally. A time-tested home remedy that benefits both children and adults is the rising foot bath.
Why is a foot bath so effective?
Through the feet, we can influence the entire body. A rising foot bath stimulates circulation, warms the body from within, and supports the immune system. It works not only locally but also affects:
-
the mucous membrans in the nose and throat
-
the pelvic organs and urinary tract
-
the intestines
-
the autonomic nervous system
Step-by-step instructions
-
Fill a bowl or bucket with lukewarm water (approx. 33–36 °C) up to mid-calf level.
-
Gradually add hot water until the bath reaches about 39–40 °C.
-
Duration: 10–15 minutes.
-
Afterwards, dry the feet, put on warm socks and rest for about 30 minutes.
Tip: Additives such as thyme tea, sea salt, or bath blends enhance the effect. Many more recipes can be found in the family guide "Wickel & Co. - Effective naturopathy for children" by Ursula Uhlemayr.
Extra feel-good moment
After the bath, the feet can be massaged with a fragrant oil, such as sea buckthorn oil, for an especially soothing and warming effect. In case of a cold, a gentle cold balm can also be applied to the soles of the feet.
Natural healing tip
A classic remedy is placing a warm slice of onion on the soles after the bath. This is particularly helpful when a cold is approaching. The onion’s natural antibiotic compounds are absorbed through the skin, enter the bloodstream, and have a mucus-loosening effect throughout the body.
If the onion smell is too strong, it can be softened with a bit of medicinal wool and a cold balm (e.g., angelica balm).
This simple home remedy becomes a small wellness ritual that benefits both body and mind—while strengthening the immune system.
